Fahrenheit 173 - Aged Spirits

"If it's not good enough to drink slowly, then it's not worth drinking"

Five Highland Single Malts

 17 Oct 2012

An Cnoc 16 y.o. 46%:
The nose is fresh but a little quiet, with notes of fruits and oak. Very nice palate: light, fresh, fruity and minty with notes of oak, white pepper and citrus. Mostly oak on the finish but also notes of custard and citrus. All in all fresh, balanced and very drinkable. Needs no water. (87 p)

Dalmore "Alexander III" 40%:
Big, busy, fragrant nose. Quite oaky with notes of dried fruits, port, Spanish brandy and crème brûlée. The palate is rich and oaky but not particularly sweet. The flavours are nicely integrated at first, but then the wine character takes over. Dry, crisp, oaky, peppery finish. All in all it's complex, unusual and rather interesting with lots of flavour. Quite busy (which is also its weakness). Blended from six(!) different types of cask: bourbon, oloroso, Madeira, Marsala, port and red wine. (86 p)

Glen Garioch 12 y.o. 48%:
Nice fruity, malty nose, young and zesty with orange marmalade, also a little oaky with note of peat. Rich, sweet palate with notes of honey and citrus. Also malty, oaky and spicy with a hint of añejo tequila. Fresh and rather nice. All in all it's a little unpolished but fresh and enjoyable (and very good value). Best with a drop of water. (87 p)

Old Pulteney 12 y.o. 40%:
Fragrant, yummy nose with tropical fruits, honey and malt. The palate is fresh, fruity, malty and fairly sweet. Mild and nice (but not as nice as the nose). On the finish the fruits fade and are replaced by malt and oak, also a little spicy heat. All in all entertaining, drinkable and easy-going. A great session malt. (Good value, too) (86 p)

Tomatin 12 y.o. 40%:
Butter, citrus, custard and oak on the nose - fairly nice but there's also a dull note of cardboard. The palate is nicer: light, sweet and smooth with a note of vanilla. Develops oak. The finish has notes of oak, mint and citrus. All in all light, easy-going and drinkable. (83 p)
