Aberlour a'bunadh batch 1 59.6% | Speyside | 8 | 0 | 8 | 90 | Wonderful, rich, sherried nose; rich, sweet palate with sherry and honey
Strathisla (GM) | 1964 2004 | Speyside | 7-8 | 8 | 90 | Nose is similar to the 25 y.o., but quieter; similar palate (yet perhaps richer) with a note of gingerbread but lacks the minty note(?)
Yamazaki Sherry Cask 48% | Japan | 7 | 0 | 8 | 90 | € 80 | 44 | Wonderful nose with sherry, vanilla and hints of coconut and turpentine; rich yet fairly dry palate, at first spicy with gingerbread then develops dried fruits and honey; quite oaky but with a nice balance between oak and sherry
Aberlour a'bunadh batch 9 60.0% | Speyside | 8 | 0 | 8 | 89 | Very similar to batch #1 but not quite as nice
BenRiach 57.8% cask 6942 | 1976 2011 | Speyside | 8 | 1 | 8 | 89 | Very oaky nose with linseed oil and brown sugar, also dried fruits and plum compôte (reminiscent of old Spanish brandies). Nice and complex but too oaky. The palate is surprisingly mild and surprisingly nice: rich, sweet and sherried with notes of caramelized sugar, gingerbread and mint. It's at first sweet then drying and develops oak. Dry, oaky finish with gingerbread and mint. Spicy and warming. Long. All in all it's a powerful winter warmer. Heavy on the oak.
Glenlivet (Sign) 53.9% cask 5720 | 1975 29 | Speyside | 0 | 8 | 89 | Wonderful nose with lots of (nice!) sherry; complex, oaky palate with a note of vanilla
Mortlach (DL) 50% | 1992-Sep 2008-Dec | Speyside | 7 | 0 | 8 | 89 | Very nice sherry on the nose with notes of dried fruits, prunes, figs; rich, fruity palate with blood orange and honey; the palate is sweet at first but drying and develops spices
Strathisla (GM) 40% | 25 | Speyside | 6 | 0 | 8 | 89 | Wonderful, richly sherried nose with notes of raisins and prunes but also light notes of citrus and peppermint; rich, sweet palate, also quite oaky and spicy but nicely offset by notes of lemon and mint; fairly dry, oaky yet nice finish with orange and gingerbread
Strathisla (GM) 43% * | 25 | Speyside | 6 | 0 | 8 | 89 | Very nice, complex nose with oak, gingerbread, honey and a hint of linseed oil. It's a little harsh neat but a little water takes care of that. Water also brings out notes of citrus and peppermint. Rich palate with notes of dried fruits and gingerbread. Quite oaky and spicy, also dry and rather hot. Water turns the heat down and brings out sweetness, honey and orange marmalade. Very nice! The finish is hot, spicy and dry with oak, gingerbread and peppermint. With water it's sweeter, milder, less spicy and oaky (and very similar to the 40% bottling from a few years ago).
BenRiach cask 3182 56.1% | 1986 2009 | Speyside | 6 | 2 | 8 | 88 | Fairly heavy nose with a strong PX sherry influence (like in some Spanish brandies) - notes of dried fruits, brown sugar and oak but also lighter notes of citrus and mint against a background of wood smoke; rich, sweet, smooth palate, a little smoky at first, then sweetness and dried fruits take over (raisins, plums) and finally it's drying and develops oak and citrus; oaky finish with notes of mint and liqourice; all in all complex and quite unusual but a bit extreme (PLOWED) |
