Springbank (local barley) 52.4% | 1965 36 | Campb. | 7 | 1-2 | 96 | € 550 | 16 | Springbank at its very best: Fantastic fruity, fragrant nose and a wonderful, complex palate with the typical spicy/fruity notes
Springbank (Cad) 50.5% | 1965 31 | Campb. | 8 | 8 | 95 | Wonderful nose with with lots of very nice sherry; water brings out the Springbank character but the sherry is still in the foreground; complex palate with sherry, vanilla, citrus fruits and cardamom
Banff (Malts of Scotland) 43.8% | 1975 36 | E Highland | 5 | 0 | 0 | 94 | Fragrant nose with vanilla, almonds, coconut, apricot and orange. Also notes of cocoa and chocolate ice cream. Wonderful! Reminds me of 1960s Springbank. The palate is rich, fruity and yummy, also oaky and fairly spicy. Milder, sweeter and even nicer with a drop of water. dull and a little disappointing after the nose and palate. (Water kills the nose, so first enjoy the nose undiluted, then add water before tasting. Or use two glasses.)
Laphroaig | 30 | Islay | 7 | 7 | 7 | 94 | € 260 | 19 | Wonderful sherry notes on the nose; earthy, medicinal palate with notes of dried fruit and also a mild floweriness; very smoky finish; wonderfully balanced
Macallan (GM) (gold label) | 40 | Speyside | 6 | 0 | 7 | 94 | A fascinating interplay of light minty notes, richer sherry notes, cinnamon and ginger and finally gingerbread in the very long finish
Springbank 46% | 21 | Campb. | 7 | 3 | 4-5 | 94 | € 100 | 57 | Rich, sweet, a bit salty/spicy with hints of fruit, vanilla (and perhaps a little coconut) with a distinct, yet light and balanced sherry taste
Springbank (HB) | 1967 34 | Campb. | 5 | 2 | 0 | 94 | € 212 | 24 | Wonderful nose with notes of fruit and vanilla; yummy, sweet, minty, fruity palate (apples); also a dash of peat that grows stronger in the finish
Ardbeg Provenance 55.6% | 1974 | Islay | 4 | 6 | 0 | 93 | € 450 | 13 | Very nice sweet nose; fairly peaty palate with sweet/fruity notes; subtle and wonderfully balanced with a very nice, quite peaty finish
BenRiach cask 8795 53.2% | 1976 2010 | Speyside | 5 | 2 | 0 | 93 | Dense, secretive nose, oaky with notes of wood smoke, black pepper and mint, some citrus coming through faintly; light, sweet palate with wonderful fruity notes (mango, melon, pear), develops oak in a beautiful balance; wonderful finish with tropical fruits; fascinating whisky, as the nose gives no clue to what lies ahead (the nose is also its only weakness)
Bowmore 45.5% * | 1968 32 | Islay | 6 | 2 | 7 | 93 | € 320 | 16 | Wonderful fruity nose; very nice palate, sweet and fruity with notes of peach |
