E Highland50094Fragrant nose with vanilla, almonds, coconut, apricot and orange. Also notes of cocoa and chocolate ice cream. Wonderful! Reminds me of 1960s Springbank. The palate is rich, fruity and yummy, also oaky and fairly spicy. Milder, sweeter and even nicer with a drop of water. dull and a little disappointing after the nose and palate. (Water kills the nose, so first enjoy the nose undiluted, then add water before tasting. Or use two glasses.)

All in all light-bodied yet quite peaty; complex with an unusual and interesting smokiness. Very nice!

Box Pioneer 48.1%Pic3Sweden73086The nose is dominated by oak but there are also notes of mint, lemon, orange, white pepper and peat. A little on the young side but the nice fruity notes make up for that. Hopefully the prominent oak won't overpower the palate and finish! Let's see... The palate is rich, sweet and fruity, also malty and oaky with notes of citrus and mint. Youthful but rather nice. The finish is oaky, peppery and a little hot but it also has a refreshing note of citrus. All in all it's very mature for its age. More-ish. An impressive first effort! The use of small casks (and partly new oak) has made it quite oaky but luckily not too oaky. A little hot without water but adding water reveals more of the youthful character. Best neat.

Isle of Jura Islands/50082The nose is youthful with a cereal note, also slightly harsh but has nice, fragrant notes of oak and green fruits. Mild, sweet palate with a fresh fruitiness (more citrus this time). It's oaky and develops more oak. Oaky, spicy finish - slightly dull and disappointing. All in all young and a little unbalanced but fresh, entertaining and drinkable. (L8091)

80082Huge, fragrant, in-your-face nose with apricot, almond, caramel, peppermint, vanilla and oak. Complex and quite nice yet a little spirity. Intense, powerful yet clean palate with a nice sweetness as well as notes of citrus, mint and vanilla. Oaky, spicy finish. All in all nice but very powerful (sometimes I like it, sometimes I find it too intense).
KaruizawaPic8Japan80382Quiet yet nice nose with gingerbread, honey and oak; the palate is at first mild, fruity and sweet but drying, develops spices and lot of oak; dry, quite spicy and disappointing finish (the label describes it as a vatting of sherry matured whiskies but the sherry character isn't prominent)

Kilchoman 46%3Islay89082Thick peat smoke and malt on the nose, also citrus, chili pepper and (unfortunately) new make; the palate is nicer, more mature: very peaty, also spicy and fairly hot, develops iodine (best without water - dilution emphasizes its youth)

Mackmyra Preludium:04 53.3%Pic Sweden50082Unusual nose with oak and fruity notes (apples and pears), also dry and "dusty"; fairly rich palate with unusual yet nice fruity notes; disappointing, flat finish; all in all complex, uneven and slightly immature

Mackmyra Svensk Rök 46.1% * Sweden64082Nice, sweet-ish smoke on the nose but unfortunately it's also floral and perfumy (from a little too much new oak, I suspect). Fruity (citrus), malty and nutty. Youthful yet complex. The palate is sweet with a prominent oak character and a note of gingerbread. The finish is peaty, quite oaky and spicy with nice refreshing notes of mint and citrus. Verdict: it has a nice, unusual peatiness but the oak character is a bit vulgar.

Sweden87082The nose is young and powerful, very malty with wood smoke and a note of engine oil. Also new oak and unusual, wine-like fruity notes. Splintered and rough with a still noticeable new make character. The palate is young, too, but more balanced and much nicer. It has lots of malt and peat smoke, nicely offset by light, fresh notes of mint and citrus. Also a herbal note of new oak. Sweet, fruity and enjoyable. The finish has peat and malt, of course, but also fresh notes of mint and vanilla. Nice! All in all it's big, peaty and powerful. Well crafted but a little immature. (Improved a lot after being open for a few months)
Speyburn (CC)Pic1971Speyside72082Very nice nose with oak and vanilla (like an old bourbon), also a hint of peat; rich, oaky and fairly dry palate (disappointing after the nice nose)

Säntis Malt Switzerland30082The nose is fruity (citrus flavoured candy, orange peel) and oaky with notes of aged rum, allspice and gunpowder. A little quiet yet complex and nice. Nice, fruity palate with notes of vanilla, caramelized sugar, black tea and white pepper. At first mild and sweet then drying and grows more intense. The finish is fruity and peppery (but in a nice balance) with a note of rum. All in all unusual, quite rum-like, nice but a bit too mild.

Speyside60082Fragrant nose with vanilla and oak shavings (makes me suspect use of new oak). Also fruity and a little flowery with a note of straw (like an old barn). Quite nice. The palate is sweet and fruity (candy-like) with oak shavings and a note of mint. Also flowery, unfortunately. Drying and develops oak. Oaky, spicy finish. Conclusion: Oak, oak and oak (and I'm not so keen on that flowery note).

400?76The nose is young but has nice spicy, fruity notes and a hint of toffee; the palate is smooth at first but develops a spicy bite and maybe even a hint of peat; a little young for my taste though
Highland Gold Blend/

42076Light, fruity and a little smoky
Latitude 55° Blend/

31376The nose is a little spirity and oily with a cereal note, also a hint of peat and nice notes of citrus fruits, caramel and oak; the palate is youngish and a bit unbalanced, sweet, develops toffee and a nice note of sherry wood; oaky, spicy, quite nice finish with notes of sage and peppermint
Longrow 46%Pic14Campb. 5? 76Nice, peaty, muscular nose with a softer note of fruit; the fruit grows stronger in the palate but overflows and collapes in the finish; a veritable anti climax

Lord Calvert3Blend/

30076Light, sweet, refreshing with citrus and vanilla, develops a little heat and notes of oak and rye; fairly young but balanced for its age
Major Gunn's Blend/
Scotland
20076The nose is spirity (although not harsh) with mostly grain whisky. Vodka-like but with nice notes of toffee and honey. The palate is light and clean but bland and a bit spirity. The finish is disappointing and (thankfully) short. Very little malt whisky in this (it probably contains more colouring than malt).
Upper Ten Blend/
Scotland
32 76Quiet nose; light, balanced palate, a little dry and peaty with a hint of liqourice; slightly peppery and peaty finish; a bit on the bland side but it's an easy-going session whisky
William Lawson's Blend/
Scotland
41076Young yet fairly nice nose with toffee, grain whisky, apricot, marzipan and a hint of oak; light, sweet yet a little harsh palate with toffee, apricot and a little oak; hot, dry but otherwise nonexistant finish
Ardbeg Special ReservePic12Islay58075Young and smoky on the nose; on the palate: still a bit young, not very balanced, with burned aromas (like burned microchips!)

Caol Ila (CC) *Pic1981Islay650?75Fairly smoky and a bit intense (needs a drop of water); all in all more balanced (but less exciting) than the 1975 RM

Highland40240Liquid soap? Car wash liquid? At any rate, there's no chance of mistaking it for a whisky (hmm, maybe I can use it as an after shave?)
Saturnus Premium Blend  51035Very sweet with notes of grapes and candy; strange, immature palate with off-notes but the finish is quite close to whisky
