Fahrenheit 173 - Whisky

"The king o' drinks, as I conceive it, Talisker, Isla or Glenlivit"   (R.L. Stevenson)

Big update

 12 Dec 2002

Two big changes:

  • I visited two(!) whisky events here in Zürich two weeks ago and tasted over 30 new whiskies!
  • I've added a "quality/price rating" (QPR) to the whisky database.

The highlights from the whisky exhibitions were Bowmore Voyage and the new UDV bottlings Brora 30 y.o. and Port Ellen 1978. The Brora is nice but simply too expensive (CHF 400 = EUR 270). I also got to try rarities like Black Bowmore (first edition) and Ladyburn 1973...

The new QPR rating uses a mathematical formula that combines the score and the price of a whisky. Basically its QPR = 10^Score / Price (with a couple of scaling factors). The ABV percentage also plays a role since people normally dilute whiskies to a preferred drinking strength (I do, anyway). In many cases this means that cask strength bottlings get a better QPR value than normal strength ones ("tänk på pocenten!"). Now, take a look at:

Most of the prices are taken from The Whisky Store but there are also some prices from duty-free airport shops. This obviously has a large influence on the QPR value, so I guess I should also give the source and the date for each price. Well... perhaps after Christmas =)
