Six single malts from German bottler The Whisky Agency

 15 Feb 2011

More tasting notes from The Whisky Ship - this time six single malts from the German bottler The Whisky Agency:

Benriach 1975 cask 3061 34 y.o. (50.6%):
Nice, quite sherried nose with orange marmalade, honey and ginger. Very, very nice palate - balanced, sweet and fruity with orange and peppermint. Also oaky and spicy in a very nice balance. However, the finish is fairly disappointing with mostly oak. (90 p)

Bowmore 1993 17 y.o. (54.6%):
Peaty, malty nose. Dry, spicy, peaty palate. Light at first, then grows powerful and develops a lot of peat. Simplistic and a little hot but quite nice. Very peaty, very nice finish with notes of tar, iodine and malt. (86 p)

Bunnahabhain 1976 32 y.o. (45.8%):
Unusual but interesting nose with notes of green fruits, pine forest and pickled gherkin. Sweet, fresh palate with apple, pear, oak and peppermint. Develops vanilla and gingerbread. All in all unusual but fascinating and actually very nice. (88 p)

Clynelish 1995 14 y.o. (48%):
Nice nose with oak, tropical fruits, vanilla and coconut. Nice, spicy, fruity palate. Develops vanilla and orange. More powerful than the OB 14 but less fragrant and less balanced. (86 p)

Glen Moray 1973 36 y.o. (53.1%):
Wonderful, fragrant nose with oak, vanilla and apricot marmalade. Also floral with a hint of cardboard. The palate is sweet and fruity but drying and develops quite a bit of oak. Wonderful finish with oak, cinnamon and mint. Great nose & finish but the palate isn't quite as nice. (91 p)

Glenury Royal 1973 37 y.o. (42.1%):
Fragrant, herbal nose with vanilla, linseed oil and crème brûlée. A little rum-like, in fact. Rich, sweet and a little fiery yet very nice palate with honey, oak and peppermint. Nice finish with a note of oak shavings. (89 p)
