Five single malt whiskies from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society

 2 Nov 2011

The Swedish chapter of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society has recently been restarted under new leadership. I attended their first tasting last week and I got to try these five malts:

Glenmorangie 1995, 11 y.o. @ 56.0%:
Nice, fresh nose with vanilla, caramelized sugar (a little rum-like), lime, orange, oak and a hint of mint. Clean, fresh palate with oak and sweetness in a very nice balance. Quite oaky and spicy yet rather nice. The finish is hot and oaky and a little disappointing. (87 p)

Glen Moray 26 y.o. @ 40.6%:
Quiet yet nice nose with dried fruits, fudge and oak. Clearly a sherry cask (oloroso?). The palate is at first sweet and fruity, then drying and develops notes of oak and marzipan. Rich, clean and balanced. Notes of gingerbread and oak on the finish. (85 p)

Littlemill 1990, 17 y.o. @ 56.0%:
Fragrant, herbal, unusual nose with a lot of oak and lots of fruits (fruit sallad). Nice and interesting. The palate is sweet, fruity and zesty. Develops oak. Oaky, fruity finish with a note of violets. All in all a little vulgar but quite nice. (The best Littlemill I've tried!) (85 p)

Glen Scotia 1999, 12 y.o. @ 59.8%:
Unusual nose: sour with notes of lemon, fried batter, gingerbread and struck match. Also a little smoky and oily (boiler room). Fairly dry palate with a nice note of dried fruits but unfortunately it's also a little sulphury. Dry finish with notes of gingerbread and mint. All in all it has an interesting nose but a disappointing palate. (83 p)

Laphroaig 1990, 20 y.o. @ 58.2%:
Powerful, very nice nose with peat, tar and iodine. Also notes of mint and orange marmalade. Wonderful palate: at first rich, sweet and fruity with a note of mint, then suddenly very peaty (like walking into a cloud of peat smoke). Powerful yet beautifully balanced. Wonderful, peaty finish with a note of mint. (91 p)
